Many children struggle with reading at some point throughout their school years. For these students, it can sometimes be difficult to identify effective strategies that teach important skills, all while keeping them engaged and excited about reading. As part of our session on “Fostering an Early Love of Reading”, I will be sharing some tips on how to create an engaging and individualized reading classroom. Based on my experience working with students and my research on reading motivation, we will focus on hands-on teaching strategies and tools you can use starting Monday morning!
As part of the training, we will explore how to create multisensory reading activities for young readers. Multisensory activities integrate many senses (sound, sight, movement, touch) to support memory and reading development. Some examples we will cover include:
- Integrating movement to learn common phonological patterns.
- Using sound and touch to learn high frequency words.
- Using rhymes to learn phonological rules.
Furthermore, you will gain strategies for creating engaging reading instruction to help children become independent and confident learners who are excited about reading. This will include strategies to teach students to how to self-regulate, adopt a growth mind set, and build their interest in reading.
We will discuss these examples and more, and share important resources you can use to support all readers in your classroom!
