Now in its tenth year, ELG’s unique therapeutic summer program is open to children of all abilities, from ages 3 and up. What makes this summer program different from others is that it is goal-oriented, with carefully chosen activities that let children learn and also integrate therapy into fun.

Using evidence-based research and coordinated by ELG’s trained professionals, such as speech-language, occupational and behavioral therapists, each activity uses therapy to target motor and/or social development, all the while disguised as play.

Regina says this program is perfect for children that need an extra boost, whether in their social skills, self-regulation or fine- and gross motor skills. The program gives children a chance to learn in a fun, natural way, as opposed to in a more rigid, academic setting they usually experience in schools. In her sixth year as summer program director, Regina Nicolas Schaufelberger, physical therapist at ELG, says, “We focus on getting ahead with fun – without the element of extra stress factors in a typical classroom, such as getting a high score in an exam, strict classroom decorum or rules.”

With three children to every one adult, children receive higher individualized attention, deepening relationships, improving social skills, and boosting confidence in each child. Children are grouped based on ability rather than age, allowing them to progress at their own pace. “We don’t look at the weaknesses and work on them, instead we find the strength and cultivate it,” says Regina.

Feedback from previous years has been overwhelmingly positive. Cheng Ji Qin, who has been room assistant at ELG for three years and helped with the summer program for the past two, recalled one child who made great progress during last year’s summer program. “There was a child here in last year’s summer program who was very shy in the school. He had also never previously been in a kitchen. After our summer program, his mother gave us feedback that he was integrating better with other children in the school,” says Cheng Ji Qin. We really believe in ELG’s motto to help children “engage, learn, and grow.”
