Thanks to ELG’s Tiffany Chen for allowing us to cross-post from her blog, SpeechWithinReach SLP.

With the excitement of Halloween now behind us, are you wondering what to do with all that leftover candy? Here is a healthy way to have fun with candy, without the cavities, or the temptation to eat your child’s candy!

Never fear, science is here! Have a go at this short fun science activity, where we explore science in Candyland!

What do I need?

  • A bag of Skittles

  • A small cup of hot water

  • Any size bowl

Instructions:

Step 1: Place the skittles around the inside of the bowl.

Step 2: Slowly pour the hot water into the middle of the bowl.

Step 3: Wait for the magic to happen!

What can I teach my child?

1. Academics:
  • Colors of the rainbow: Skittles come in all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, etc.

2. General Knowledge:
  • Colors of fruits and their taste: Oranges are the color orange and they taste tangy; Lemons are yellow and taste sour.

3. Life Skills:
  • Be careful with hot objects: Teach your child to handle hot things with care, and always be aware when there are hot objects in their environment. It’s also okay to ask for an adult for help when there are hot objects involved!

4. Language:
  • Spatial Concepts: Place the Skittles inside the bowl, around the bowl, and pour the water into the middle of the bowl.

  • Quantity: Before you fill up the bowl, it is empty. After you add skittles to the bowl it becomes full.

Your child is bound to be so excited when they discover the results. Why not try what happens with other kinds of candy? Who knows what other cool effects you may discover!

Have Fun!
