Research has shown that integrating physical activity in the classroom effectively improves physical fitness, on-task behavior, and academic test scores. Most teachers understand the importance of physical activity for children, but find it hard to incorporate into their lessons. Common barriers include low priority in school policy, lack of infrastructure, time constraints, and lack of knowledge. Below are some simple tips for implementing physical activity in the classroom.

Tip 1: Use movement-based learning techniques in large group lessons.

For example, have students walk around the perimeter of the classroom while learning vocabulary, or use music and rhythmic movement to enhance memorization tasks.

Tip 2: Take short exercise breaks prior to teaching subjects that require intense student concentration.

For example, spend 5 minutes walking, or facilitate 10 minutes of prescribed exercise.
