There are many ways of conceptualizing and coping with cultural changes and how to adapt to them. However, most methods fail to address the inevitable emotional response associated with being confronted by unfamiliarity. Mindfulness is a new approach in counselling and psychotherapy that focuses on acceptance and living a fulfilling life with uncontrollability. This new approach offers a new perspective to guide people and professionals to navigate through cultural adaptation.

In this seminar, we will first explore the emotional responses commonly associated with transitioning. We will then look at ways that people cope (or fail to cope) with these emotions. Finally, we will offer mindfulness as an alternative to perceive and cope with negative feelings.

This seminar is suitable for anyone who works with helping people adapt to new cultures or diverse settings, as well as for anyone who is about to go through a significant cultural transition.

The skills learned in this workshop can be transferred to other life challenges. We will be doing some optional guided mediation in the seminar.
