Developmental Screenings

For children aged 2 – 5 years 11 months

What are Developmental Screenings?

Developmental Screenings are brief, formal tests of a child’s developmental skills. They provide information about the child’s development in key areas, and offer an indication of which further assessments, if any, are appropriate.

Who benefits from Developmental Screenings?

Any child who has unanswered questions about any aspect of their development can benefit.

What do Developmental Screenings consist of?

Screenings are typically 10-15 minutes long. Through the use of standardized tests, specialists assess whether certain developmental milestones have been met across a number of areas:

Speech and language skills

We screen for the following:

  • Attention and listening skills
  • Language comprehension (for example, following directions)
  • Language expression (for example, putting together/combining words to make sentences and phrases)
  • Articulation (how to produce sounds to form words)
  • Ability to socially engage with others

Fine and gross motor skills

We screen for the following:

  • Fine motor skills (for example, holding a pencil and working on the computer)
  • Gross motor skills (for example, balance and coordination)

What can Developmental Screenings help with?

  • Providing basis for further in depth assessments, or monitoring known issues
  • Educating teachers and parents about the child’s strengths and challenges

What is the first step?

When you contact us, our Intake Specialist will discuss your needs and concerns with you over the phone. She will then consult with our team of specialists to match you with the most suitable professional to support you and your child.

You will then meet with the specialist(s) for an intake meeting, during which they will work with you to determine the most appropriate next steps for your child. The intake meeting usually involves a parent interview, an observation of your child, or a screening activity with your child.
