Week 2 of the Summer Program continued with an “Under the Sea” theme, making us all jealous that we couldn’t also fight off Shanghai’s summer heat with an underwater adventure. This week, children and young adults adopted octopuses, experimented with slime, dove into homemade ice cream, and more.

This Week’s Theme: Under the Sea

Art Monday: Adopt an Octopus

This week began with an arts-and-crafts activity , which promoted communication, gross motor, and fine motor skills. Children and young adults made whimsical octopuses using plastic bottles by filling the bottles with colored water and glitter, and a knotted plastic bag.

Shopping Tuesday: Jiaozi Gems

On Tuesday, we paused the Under the Sea theme to teach the children and young adults how to make dumplings, encouraging creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. After shopping for ingredients at Carrefour, they learned how to make various types of fillings and jiaozi in a variety of shapes. Our chef taught them some traditional forms, but some kids used their creativity to invent more artistic shapes, such as a crown. The Summer Program’s frequent cooking exercises teach kids and young adults how to follow procedures and provide them with sensory integration.

Science Wednesday: Slimy Experiment

The following day, the kids and young adults got absorbed by slime. The children were taught how to make slime by combining corn starch, water, and food coloring. This is an easy project you can do at home (mix about one part corn starch with two parts water, and add as much or as little food coloring as you like) to help your kids gain sensory integration, cooperation and language skills.

Ice Cream Thursday: Sunny Sundaes

This Thursday, the younger kids made ocean-themed ice cream sundaes. The ocean-themed sundaes were made by making blue ice cream and sprinkling crushed biscuits and gummy octopuses on top.

Summer Fun Friday: Watery Rest

Finally, the week ended with Summer Fun Friday. The morning was spent outside playing in water, which always makes a splash. In the afternoon, the children and young adults in the Summer Program watched Finding Dory and attended a brief introduction to the Grounds for Growth Garden. Next week, they can look forward to putting their gardening knowledge to use.
